We research what people actually want, before it's built.
First Look Research runs small, focused studies to learn whether a new product idea solves a real problem. Most don't. The ones that do move forward with the people who helped us find out.
Three steps, and nothing is built until the third one earns it.
A study is research, not a launch. It exists to find out whether an idea deserves to exist at all.
Step one
We spot a signal
We read what people say in public: forums, reviews, questions, complaints. When the same unmet need keeps surfacing, it becomes a candidate worth testing.
Step two
We run a small study
A short page, a few questions, sometimes a conversation. We describe the idea honestly and measure whether real people want it. Nothing is for sale, because nothing is built.
Step three
You get a first look
Most ideas stop here, and we say so. If one has real demand, the people who shaped the answer are first to hear about it and first to try it.
A study is one honest page.
No countdown timers, no invented company, no pretending the thing already exists.
- What the idea is, in plain words.
- Who we think it is for, and what problem it solves.
- One question: would you actually use this?
- An email box, only if you want to be told what happened.
Everyday software, not enterprise procurement.
We study digital products people would choose for themselves, across the areas where unmet needs get talked about openly.
Research only works if people can trust it.
These are commitments, not marketing copy. If we break one, tell us and we will fix it.
We are independent
We are not affiliated with the companies or products named in a study, unless that study says so explicitly. We are not paid to reach a conclusion.
We ask for as little as possible
An email address, and only if you want to hear the outcome. We do not build advertising profiles and we do not sell your data to anyone.
Leaving takes one click
Every message we send has a one-click unsubscribe. You can opt out of every study at any time, and we keep only a minimal record so we do not contact you again by mistake.
We tell you when the answer is no
Most ideas we test do not go anywhere. That is a useful result, and it is the most common one. We would rather find out early than build the wrong thing.
Heard from us, or found a study?
The things people reasonably want to know before they reply to a stranger.
Why did I hear from you?
Because we are researching a problem in an area you have taken part in publicly, for example a forum thread, a question, or a review. We always say what we are studying and why. One reply telling us to stop is enough, and we will not contact you again.
Is there something to buy?
No. A study runs before anything is built, so there is nothing to sell you. We never ask for payment details, and we never will as part of a study.
What happens to my email address?
It is used for one thing: telling you what happened to the idea you helped us test, and offering early access if it moves forward. We do not sell it and we do not build ad profiles. The privacy policy sets out the detail, including how to have it deleted.
How do I opt out of everything?
Use the unsubscribe link in any message, or the unsubscribe page. We stop contacting you straight away and keep only a suppression record so you are not emailed again.
Who is behind First Look Research?
An independent studio that researches early demand for digital products, then builds the few ideas that earn it. If you want to check we are real people before replying, email us and a person will answer.
Questions about a study?
A person reads every message, usually within a day or two.
